If I’m being honest I don’t really remember too much about learning how to read. The only thing I recall is that when I was learning I was reading word by word because it was hard for me to read. Another thing I recall is that reading came pretty natural because I already knew how to speak English so I basically knew the words. I think it helped that my parents didn’t push Spanish in my mind first. I think if I was hearing and learning Spanish it would’ve made it hard to speak, read, and write in English. What I also remember about reading is that they made it a main focus from Preschool-5th grade and I think they mainly focused on this so that we can get comfortable speaking in English and so further down the line we would be able to write papers without problems. I also remember that reading books in school and taking test based on those books was a big part of your grade. For that reason it made me read more so that I could pass with a good grade. What I also remember is that they focused a lot on vowels. They also focused on nouns and verbs.
